Beginner Lesson (dinnertime)
About This Event
Beginner American Mah Jongg Workshop Learn American Mah Jongg from the ground up in this comprehensive, instructor-led beginner workshop designed specifically for those with no prior Mah Jongg experience (or for players who want a true restart). In this immersive, hands-on session, you’ll be guided step by step from “What are all these tiles?” to confidently playing your first full game. The workshop is thoughtfully paced, includes a mid-session break, and provides plenty of individual attention so no one feels rushed or left behind. By the end of the class, you’ll understand not just how to play, but why the game works the way it does which will set you up to continue playing with confidence. First Half: Foundations & Setup We’ll start with the essentials and build a strong foundation for play: -Introduction to American-style mah jongg tiles and their names -Key terminology used at the table -How to read and understand the National Mah Jongg League card -What a winning Mah Jongg hand looks like -A clear, guided introduction to the Charleston and how it fits into the flow of the game This portion is interactive and paced to allow for questions, repetition, and hands-on practice. Mid-Workshop Break Take a well-timed break to rest your brain, ask follow-up questions, and connect with fellow players before moving into gameplay. Your registration includes a **$10 food and beverage credit** to use during the class. Second Half: Playing with Guidance In the second half, we’ll bring everything together: -Learn the pick-and-discard phase of the game -Understand basic strategy and decision-making -Practice recognizing potential hands and opportunities -Play a full guided game with instructor support throughout I’ll be on hand to answer questions in real time, gently correct mistakes, and help you feel comfortable with the rhythm of the game so you leave knowing you can sit down and play again.
