I Want to Learn!
Our beginner workshops are designed for people with zero Mah Jongg experience. In one fun, hands-on session with a break in the middle, you will go from "what are all these tiles?" to confidently playing your first games.
How the Workshop Works
First Half: Getting Started
Learn about the tiles, how to read the NMJL card, and the basic flow of the game. We cover everything from setting up the wall to picking and discarding tiles.
Mid-Workshop Break
Take a breather with a complimentary food and beverage credit at The Kitchen Table. Refuel, ask questions, and get to know your fellow players.
Second Half: Playing the Game
Put your new skills into practice. Play full games with guidance, learn common patterns, and start developing your own playing style.
What You'll Learn
Tiles & Suits
Learn to recognize all 152 tiles — bamboos, cracks, dots, winds, dragons, flowers, and jokers.
Reading the Card
Understand the NMJL card, how hands are organized, and how to pick which hand to play.
Gameplay Basics
Master the Charleston, picking, discarding, calling tiles, and declaring Mah Jongg.
Strategy Foundations
Start thinking strategically — when to switch hands, defensive play basics, and table awareness.
No Experience Needed
You don't need to know anything about Mah Jongg to join a workshop. We provide everything you need — tiles, cards, and plenty of patience. Just show up ready to have fun.
